SMERDT – Shri. Manteswamy Education and Rural Development Trust

Sri Manteswamy Matha is a 15th Century socio-religious institution founded by Sri Manteswamy, a revolutionary saint. The Matha is founded on the principles of the 800- year-old Shiva Sharana Parampare. The Manteswamy Matha, Malavalli, manages the gaddiges of our Gurus at Malavalli, Adi Honnayakanahalli, Shri Kappadi Kshetra & Kunanakoppal.

The Matha is based on the strong principles of public service. It has a large devotee base in the rural areas of Karnataka and is making efforts to bring a positive transformation in their lives. The Matha believes that education is a catalyst for creating a better tomorrow and a conducive environment in our rural communities, which would in turn translate into empowering not only our nation but also the world at large, which in the words of Manteswamy is ‘Loka Kalyana’ (Universal Betterment).

We believe that education plays a key role in furthering the principles upon which the Sri Matha is founded. That the ‘public education system’ should continue to play its stellar role in building a socially just and equitable society.

We have set out with a vision “TO PROVIDE A CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT WHERE CHILDREN CAN ACHIEVE SUCCESS TO THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL AND EDUCATION TO BE MADE IN THE TRUE SENSE LIBERAL WHICH IN TURN HERALDS A POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE COMMUNITY WE LIVE” thus Shri. Manteswamy Education and Rural Development Trust (SMERDT) was born.

During Academic year 2017-18 we adopted the Government School (& Anganavadi) in our village Adi-Honnayakanahalli and have supported it ever since. We are also closely working with the Government Schools in Kunanakoppal (Malavalli Taluk), Boppasamudra (Maddur Taluk) Kadadi (Gadag) and Ravandur (Periyapatna Taluk).

Introduction to Government Higher Primary School, Honnayakanahalli, Maddur Taluk, Mandya Dist.

In the year 2017 SMERDT adopted the GHPS, Honnayakanahalli by executing a Memorandum of understanding with the Block Education Officer of Maddur Taluk. Prior to adopting (in the AY 2016-17) the school student strength was at 57 students in Grade 1 to 7, during the first year after adoption AY 2017-18 the strength increased to 70 students from Grade 1 to 7, For AY 2018-19 the strength further increased to 88 students from Grade 1 to 7. In addition to supporting the GHPS, we have adopted the anganvadi and have started preschool (LKG and UKG). For 2017-18 we had 61 children in LKG and UKG and for AY 2018-19 we had 67 children in the preschool. Kindly note that the pre-school (LKG and UKG) is run wholly by SMERDT.

Prior to adoption the school had 2 teachers and 1 acting headmaster. In addition to them we have been supporting the school by providing additional teachers (), creating a cleaner and hygienic space for learning, carrying out repair works and setting up basic civic amenities for the students, providing stationery and academic books, introducing extracurricular activities such as art and yoga, impetus was given to students to participate in events and competitions, conducted an excursion to Hampi, Badami and other historical places in North and Central Karnataka. It is also a matter of immense joy to share that students of Grade 7 participated in the ‘Prathiba Kaaranji’ and secured first place in the District (first time in the history of the GHPS that the students have participated and won in an event outside of the village). We have also emphasized on the importance of parent involvement in the children’s education and have started organizing the school annual day from AY 2017-18. By the end of AY 2018-19 the department has deputed one more full time teacher.
